Counselling for Parents
Parenting can be one of the most rewarding parts of life, but it can also be emotionally demanding. You might find yourself worrying about your children, questioning whether you're doing enough, or feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of everyday family life.
At the same time, you may be dealing with challenges in other areas of your life, such as work, relationships, anxiety or your own emotional wellbeing. These experiences don't happen separately from being a parent. How you're feeling can affect family life, just as the demands of parenting can affect how you feel.
With so much advice about how to be a good parent, it can also be difficult to know what's right for you and your family.
How counselling can help
Counselling offers a space where you can talk openly about what's going on in your life, without feeling judged or having to worry about anyone else's needs or feelings.
You might want to explore the pressures you're facing, understand why you're feeling anxious or overwhelmed, or have some time to think about how you're feeling and what might help.
Sometimes parenting itself can bring up strong emotions. You may find yourself reacting to your children in ways you'd like to understand or change. Our own experiences, including how we were parented, can influence how we respond, particularly when we're tired or under pressure.
Together, we can explore these feelings and experiences, understand what might be behind them and look at ways to manage difficult emotions and respond more thoughtfully.
Counselling isn't about telling you how to parent or giving you another set of rules to follow. It can help you become more confident in your own judgement and make choices that reflect what's important to you and your family.
Your sessions don't have to focus on parenting. They're a space for you to explore whatever is important in your life.
Supporting yourself and your family
Looking after your emotional wellbeing isn't selfish. When you feel more supported and better able to manage your own emotions, this can have a positive effect on your relationships with your children and family.
Parenting doesn't mean always being calm, patient or getting everything right. Understanding yourself, recognising when things haven't gone as you'd hoped and finding ways to reconnect can all make a difference.
